Description: Ahifen, commonly known as Opium Poppy, is an annual herb with a smooth, erect stem that can grow up to 1-1.5 meters tall. The leaves are large, lobed, and have a blue-green color with a waxy coating. The plant produces solitary, showy flowers that can be white, pink, red, or purple. The fruit is a large, globular capsule that contains numerous tiny seeds.
Occurrence: Ahifen is native to the Mediterranean region but is now widely cultivated in various parts of the world, including India, Turkey, Afghanistan, and other countries with suitable climates. It grows well in temperate regions and requires well-drained, fertile soil.

Mode of Action: Ahifen’s analgesic properties are primarily due to its alkaloid content, particularly morphine, which binds to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord to reduce pain perception. The sedative effect is achieved by depressing the central nervous system, promoting relaxation and sleep. Its antitussive properties help suppress cough by acting on the cough center in the brain. The antispasmodic action relieves muscle spasms by relaxing smooth muscles. Ahifen also exhibits astringent properties, making it effective in treating diarrhea by reducing intestinal motility.
