Bhallatak, commonly known as the marking nut tree, is a medium-sized deciduous tree reaching up to 15 meters in height. It has dark bark, simple oblong leaves, and bears small greenish-yellow flowers in clusters. The tree produces kidney-shaped nuts that turn black upon ripening. The blackish, resinous oil extracted from the nut is used for medicinal purposes but can be caustic, requiring careful preparation.
Bhallatak is widely found across tropical regions of India, mainly in the foothills of the Himalayas, and in states like Maharashtra, Bihar, and West Bengal. It grows in both dry and moist forest areas, up to an altitude of about 1,000 meters.

Bhallatak is a revered herb in Ayurveda for its powerful effect on balancing Kapha and Vata doshas. It is especially noted for its properties in promoting digestion, immunity, and rejuvenation.
Bhallatak’s action is based on its tikshna (sharp) and ushna (hot) properties, which effectively balance Kapha and Vata doshas. It acts as a stimulant for the digestive fire (Agni), which helps in efficient metabolism, reducing ama (toxins) in the body. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties strengthen immunity and prevent degenerative changes, while its purifying effect on the blood improves skin health. Bhallatak’s sharp nature helps break down accumulations, such as mucus in the respiratory tract or toxins in the urinary system, promoting overall detoxification.
Bhallatak is a potent herb and should be used with great caution, typically under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.
