Description: Guggulu, also known as Indian Bdellium, is a small, thorny shrub that typically grows up to 4 meters in height. It has a thin, papery bark that peels off in strips and produces a fragrant resin. The leaves are simple or trifoliate, and the flowers are small, red to pink, and appear in clusters. The resin, known as guggulu, is the primary part used in Ayurvedic medicine.
Occurrence: Guggulu is native to the Indian subcontinent, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. It is commonly found in the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Karnataka, thriving in dry, rocky soils and low rainfall areas.

Mode of Action: Guggulu’s anti-inflammatory properties are attributed to its guggulsterones, which inhibit the activity of inflammatory mediators. Its hypolipidemic effects help in lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels by increasing the uptake of LDL cholesterol by the liver and promoting its excretion. The resin also stimulates the thyroid gland, enhancing metabolism and aiding in weight management. Its antimicrobial properties help in fighting infections, while its detoxifying action purifies the blood and removes toxins.
