Nadihingu, scientifically known as Gardenia gummifera, is an important medicinal plant in Ayurveda. It belongs to the Rubiaceae family and is commonly used for its potent therapeutic effects, particularly in digestive and inflammatory disorders. With a strong and pungent aroma, this resinous substance is known for its ability to balance Vata and Kapha doshas while mildly increasing Pitta.
One of the most well-recognized uses of Nadihingu in Ayurveda is in the treatment of Gulma, a condition characterized by the formation of abdominal masses, distension, and severe digestive discomfort.
Gulma is classified based on the involvement of different doshas:
Vataja Gulma – Caused by excessive Vata dosha, leading to irregular peristalsis, severe colic, and bloating.
Pittaja Gulma – Caused by excessive Pitta dosha, resulting in a burning sensation and inflammation.
Kaphaja Gulma – Due to Kapha accumulation, leading to heaviness, sluggish digestion, and stagnation.
Sannipataja Gulma – A combination of all three doshas, leading to chronic and severe conditions.
Rakta Gulma – Due to blood vitiation, often linked to gynecological disorders.
Nadihingu is particularly effective in treating Vataja Gulma, where excess Vata leads to painful abdominal masses, irregular digestion, and spasmodic colic.
