Cinnamomum camphora (L.) J. Presl
Lauraceae (Laurel family)
Ushak, commonly known as camphor, is a medium-to-large evergreen tree that grows up to 20–30 meters in height. The bark is rough and brownish, while the leaves are glossy, ovate, and emit a distinctive camphoraceous odor when crushed. The tree produces small white flowers and round blackish fruits. Camphor is extracted from the wood of the tree, which undergoes a distillation and crystallization process to yield the white crystalline substance.
In Ayurveda, camphor has been valued for centuries due to its therapeutic properties and aromatic essence. It is also considered a sacred ingredient in many rituals and ceremonies, symbolizing purity and divinity.
The camphor tree is native to East Asia, particularly China, Japan, and Taiwan. However, it is also cultivated in India, especially in the Himalayan regions and southern parts of the country like Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The tree thrives in tropical and subtropical climates with well-drained soil.
The therapeutic properties of camphor are attributed to its chemical composition, which includes:
Respiratory Health:
Ushak is a potent expectorant and decongestant, used to treat conditions like asthma, bronchitis, and nasal congestion.
Skin Disorders:
Its antimicrobial and cooling properties make it effective in treating acne, rashes, eczema, and fungal infections.

Its aroma calms the mind and is used in aromatherapy to alleviate stress, anxiety, and insomnia.
Antimicrobial Action:
Camphor is widely used in disinfectants and antiseptic formulations to prevent infections.
Sacred Use:
In Ayurveda, it is burned as part of purification rituals to cleanse the environment and promote positivity.
Respiratory Relief:
Camphor acts on the respiratory system by stimulating mucosal secretions, helping to loosen phlegm and ease breathing.
Cooling Effect:
Its sheeta (cooling) property soothes inflammation, making it ideal for skin conditions and fevers.

By acting on sensory nerve endings, camphor reduces pain perception and provides localized relief.
